#9 Humbled Healing

In Matthew 8 the leper seeks healing from Jesus. It is interesting how he approached Jesus:

When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him. And a leper came to Him and bowed down before Him, and said, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. (8:1-3).

First he “came to him”. He sought him out.

Secondly he told Jesus, “if you are willing.” This shows a submissive attitude toward the Lord; a willingness to accept the will of God. He makes his request known, a desire to be made clean, yet expresses a willingness to let Jesus decide.

Jesus responds with “I am willing; be cleansed,” and the man was made clean of his leprosy. Then Jesus instructs him: “See that you tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” I think this instruction keeps the man’s perspective toward God. He doesn’t just focus on the healing, but in what God did for him — “as a testimony to them.”

God wants to hear our requests, our desire for healing, yet we should also be willing to submit to his will. It is a hard thing to long for healing and to wait on the Lord. Sometimes it is hard to understand His reasons, His purposes, but we should approach God with the attitude of the leper, “Lord, if You are willing.” If God choses to heal, then we should praise him and give him glory “as a testimony” to others.

    1. It can be hard to trust God’s timing, but I think of Proverbs 3:5-6:
      “Trust in the LORD with all your heart
      And do not lean on your own understanding.
      In all your ways acknowledge Him,
      And He will make your paths straight.”

  3. Seeking Jesus, being submissive to His will – Yes! And coming to Him in full faith: “You can make me clean.” That guy absolutely believed Jesus could do it, but bent himself to the will of Jesus.
