Have you ever had a subtle thought to do something for a stranger then debated whether to act on it? Sometimes those simple gestures can be life-changing so it’s important to know if they are from the Spirit of God. Consider the following incident.
It was a simple gesture to a stranger. He asked for a drink of water and she gave it to him. Then she extended her generosity and offered to water his camels. She had no idea that simple act would change her life.
The recipient of this act of kindness was the servant of Abraham sent to find a wife for Isaac. His instructions were to “go to my country and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac (Genesis 24:4, NASB).” The servant is intent on following God’s lead. In verses 12-14 he asks God to make it clear who it should be. Rebekah’s offer to water his camels was the sign that she was the one.
He said to her in response, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His lovingkindness and His truth toward my master; as for me, the LORD has guided me in the way to the house of my master’s brothers (Genesis 24:27, NASB)
Scripture doesn’t tell us what prompted Rebekah to offer to water the camels too, but it was an answer to the servant’s and Abraham’s prayer. You never know when God might use your simple act to answer someone’s prayer. Take a moment to read Genesis 24 and reflect on how God might use you today.
For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward. – Mark 9:41, NASB
