Steps in Time

When I saw the prophet Isaiah pass by, I saw his somber face. I knew the news would not be good for King Hezekiah. I had seen that look on the prophet’s face before when he brought a solemn Word from God. I wondered if perhaps the Word pertained to Hezekiah himself.

I dipped my head in sorrow, hoping we would not lose this good King who followed God’s way and did what was right. Such an upright man of character who thankfully didn’t follow the evil path of his father Ahaz. His devotion to God; his desire to follow God’s way, saved us from the hand of godless nations who sought to destroy us. Fear filled me as I wondered what might become of us — what would become of me.

As I trudged up the stairway of Ahaz, I looked at the shadow on the stairs. Each day I knew the time of day by the location of the shadow. I wondered if our time as a nation was short. But then I noticed something strange. It seemed the shadow on the step was reversing its downward movement. I watched in amazement as the shadow moved up 10 steps.

I stared in awe at the new location of the shadow. Could this be the hand of God upon us, a sign we would have more time with King Hezekiah to guide us? I raced up the steps, filled with excitement. I had to share what I just saw.

#WednesdayWalk Through the Bible — an exploration of what unknown people might have seen or felt when they witnessed the events in the Bible. This post is from the perspective of a person who saw the shadow move up 10 steps on the stairway of Ahaz, based on Isaiah 38:7-8.

  1. It would be exciting and bemusing to witness some of the miracles in the Old Testament. May we be so excited and bemused today.

  2. I thank God for these lovely insights into the lives of those we find in His Word, thank you for being faithful to write and share them.
