We are bombarded with information each day. The internet is flooded with people preaching different claims about God and Jesus. How do you know if what they say is true? The Bereans give us a good example of how we should fact check what is said against the authentic Word of God.
In Acts 17:10-12, Paul travels to Berea and goes into the synagogue of the Jews to preach the gospel of Jesus (10). Verse 11 tells us, “they received the word with great eagerness (NASB).” That tells us they were receptive to hearing about Jesus, not discrediting it.
But they didn’t just take Paul’s word for it, as good as it sounded. Verse 11 goes on to tell us they were “examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” Even though they were eager to accept Paul’s preaching they fact checked it against the Word of God.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 warns us of a time when people will ignore “sound doctrine” and desire to “have their ears tickled.” They will seek teachers who tell them what they want to hear, “and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.” Be sure to fact check what you hear against the authentic Word of God.
That includes my posts. Take a few minutes to read for yourself the scriptures I use. Examine God’s Word and let His Spirit speak to you, not just the voices of others. Receive the gospel of Jesus with eagerness and examine the scriptures daily as the Bereans did thousands of years ago
Therefore many of them believed, along with a number of prominent Greek women and men. – Acts 17:12, NASB
