Anxious About Being Anxious

Is it possible to not be anxious about anything? Philippians 4:6 tells us to “be anxious for nothing.” Is it in our capacity to not worry about things in this life? The path to calming our fears starts before this verse.

Verse 4:4 tells us, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!” If we have the mind to praise God no matter what, we will be oriented toward trusting Him no matter what happens. To lift up praise to God in dire circumstances is to embrace His gentle, calm Spirit and to know He is near (verse 5).

Knowing God is always near, we can turn to Him in prayer, turning over our fears and worries; being thankful that our concerns are God’s concerns (6). Calming ourselves and releasing our anxiety to God brings us to verse 7: “And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (4:7).”

A quick recap of the steps to follow when you are anxious:

  • Read Philippians 4:4-7
  • Rejoice in the Lord
  • Embrace God’s gentle Spirit
  • Know God is always near
  • Release your worries to God in heartfelt prayer
  • Let the peace of God wash over you

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. – Philippians 4:11, NASB

  1. Thank you, Brother! The Lord has been ministering His anxiety release to me very pointedly these past days and healing the burden’s effects. Very precise post, precisely here on time.

  2. I like how you backed up two verses to get the full context of what Paul said. It’s frustrating to be told to do something—especially if it’s a challenging goal—without receiving a “how to.” I’ve probably heard the “Rejoice always” (be grateful to God) advice before, but had forgotten. Thank you for the reminder, Chris. As you say, “Blessings!”
