Faced With A Choice

This man steps in front of me. I immediately recognize Him. He’s the one so many have been talking about around town. He’s controversial, saying things that upset others. Some say he’s a radical and they avoid him. “What do you think?” They ask me. I just shrug my shoulders and move on. I never felt the need to have an opinion one way or another. But today he is asking me to make a choice.

“Follow Me,” he says, the question pointed directly at me. The words echo in my mind. There he stands, right in front of me. His eyes penetrate me. I sense he knows all about my inner being even though we have never met. A certain peace washes over me, a calm I cannot explain. Seconds tick by. Three. Four. Five. He’s waiting for my reply.

The choice is mine. I feel no obligation to go, yet I am drawn to him. He’s not trying to convince me or persuade me, just two simple words is all He used, “Follow Me.”

As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called Matthew, sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him. – Matthew 9:9, NASB
