Same-day Delivery from God

Sometimes I feel like I’m making orders from God and telling him three-day shipping isn’t fast enough. I want same-day service from him when it comes to relieving the pain of struggles in life. I want instant transformation when it comes to people I know who continually reject Jesus. I want one-click responses from God to my desires.

They seem like worthy requests to me. Why wouldn’t God want someone to feel relief from difficult trials and see how He can do miraculous things? Why wouldn’t God want someone to come to faith in Jesus? Yet when I pray these things and become impatient, I recognize that my impatience is a sign that my desires are not necessarily aligned with God’s desires.

John 15:4 reminds us: “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me (NASB).” We need to trust God’s timing, His wisdom in all things despite our impatience with Him. Paul reminded us: “So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires (Romans 9:18).”

God’s purposes are not always our purposes. I venture to say that more times than not, my desires are not aligned with God’s desire. My impatience reminds me that I need to align myself with God, praying in the Spirit of God that, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).” I must trust that God will deliver what we truly need at just the right time. He is faithful. His truth reigns. His wisdom is far better than any wisdom this world offers.

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. – 2 Peter 3:9, NASB
