Putting Your Heart and Soul Into It

Deuteronomy 6:5 tells us: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” It is a scripture Jesus quoted when asked what is the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37). But how do you do that?

You start by putting God first in your life, above all things. “You shall have no other gods before Me (Deuteronomy 5:7).” Then you remain focused on God, not making idols of other things in your life and not worshipping other things above God. “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them… (5:8-9).”

You decide to treat God with respect, honoring His name and not disparaging Him. “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain (5:11).” Plus you make time to seek him in prayer and worship, setting aside time to focus on God and what He has done for you. “Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.”

And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?” And he answered, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE.” – Luke 10:25-28 (NASB)
