Your Close Friend Wisdom

God’s wisdom is not a passive thing. It is something that you must accept and maintain. Proverbs 4 provides advice on how to nurture God’s wisdom within you. This proverb is written as a father giving advice to his child.

“Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding! Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth (verse 5).” You must first be willing to accept God’s wisdom and be determined to keep it and practice it. To maintain it, you must view it as a relationship. “Do not forsake her, and she will guard you (6).” Wisdom is a like a close friendship. “Love her, and she will watch over you (6).” Wisdom as your close friend can counsel you on the right decision in the eyes of God.

It is one thing to acquire a friendship, but only by seeking a deeper relationship will you truly understand each other. “The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding (7).” You should value your relationship with wisdom. “Prize her, and she will exalt you; She will honor you if you embrace her (8).”

Like a good friend you’ve know for years, a friend who has helped you navigate the challenges of life, God’s wisdom becomes someone your rely on. Wisdom becomes that old friend with solid advice, someone you can trust. Wisdom will respect you if you respect wisdom. “She will place on your head a garland of grace; She will present you with a crown of beauty (9).”

I have directed you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in upright paths. When you walk, your steps will not be impeded; And if you run, you will not stumble. – Proverbs 4:11-12 (NASB)
