#Retrospective — This post originally published April 22. 2020.
I stood in the other room with my fellow servant so our friend could not hear us. “How long has he been paralyzed like this?” I asked.
“Quite some time,” he responded. “He is tormented by it.”
I sighed as I heard his moans from the pain in the other room. “Is there anything we can do?”
“We’ve tried everything to help him, except…”
I stared at him as he hesitated to finish his sentence. “Except what?”
“Well, except going to that Jesus guy who has been healing people.”
“Jesus? You don’t really believe he can heal him?”
“Well, our master does. He heard Jesus is in town so he left awhile ago to ask Jesus to heal him.”
“I can’t believe a Centurion would stoop to that level. How embarrassing. Why would such a man of authority seek a Jewish teacher? He’ll get us all in trouble.”
“I don’t know, I guess he really cares — believes Jesus can heal him.”
“I can’t believe he would put so much faith in that Jesus.”
My fellow servant just shrugged.
“Come on, we have work to do before our master returns. I started to leave when I heard someone shouting from the other room. I turned to see our paralyzed friend approaching us from the other room.
“My pain is gone! I’m no longer paralyzed!” He said in an excited voice. “I can’t believe it.”
“But how?” I asked.
“I don’t know. One moment I’m moaning with pain and the next moment it’s gone!”
We just stared at our friend who was now laughing with joy in front of us. Then he asked us, “Where’s our master? I need to tell him the good news!”
“He stepped out for awhile,” I offered.
“Stepped out!” My fellow servant exclaimed. “He didn’t just step out, he went to Jesus to see if he could heal you.”
Our formerly paralyzed friend stood silent and stared at us with a surprised look. Deep inside I fought my skepticism. Could it be possible that Jesus healed him?

I love this story! I have thought of it a lot lately, since we haven’t been able to get together physically as a church, just on line. I know Jesus stood out for His willingness to touch lepers, but He was also able to heal long-distance. Distance can’t hinder God!
I like the point you make about not being able to meet physically as a church — that we’re still connected through Christ. Indeed, distance
