The Fruit of Perseverance

This time of year, I anxiously await the fruit of my labor in my garden. The plants are growing taller and some are flowering. I start to hope these plants will start to look like the picture on the seed packet showing plants overflowing with produce. I like to think these are the seeds in the good soil like the parable in Luke 8:4-15.

I have read this parable many times, written posts on it and heard several sermons on it. Yet when I read it this time verse 15 stuck out: “But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance (NASB).” It is one thing to be a seed in good soil, but another thing to germinate, grow and mature.

Storms will come and people will try to take away the word of God sown in you, but your desire to “hold it fast” will help you put down roots to secure it in your heart. Overtime, as you continue to feed on the Word of God, the nutrients will grow you and mature you. You will “bear fruit with perseverance.” It does not come easy. Some days it may seem hopeless, but hold on and persevere in the Word of God.

  1. Great post! I especially like when you mention that it is one thing to be planted in soil, and another thing to germinate and bear good fruit. I think Jesus eloquently describes this by describing different environments where seeds can be planted but not bear fruit. This is why it is so important to be grounded in soil, so that we can withstand harsh conditions and continue to bear fruit in the world. This is what I recently wrote about in my own post, “Parables and Positive Psychology.” In these, I tie the parables of Jesus into the scientific field of positive psychology, which is the scientific study of well being and happiness. Feel free to stop and check out any of the material, I think you would find it interesting. I hope to see you there but regardless, great post, I hope you are doing well, and God bless you!
