In the midst of the deep darkness, deeper than any darkness ever seen, the light glowed like a beacon in the night. For days Egypt had been devastated by plagues because of Pharaoh’s hardened heart. This latest one placed “thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days (Exodus 10:22-23, NASB).”
Yet “all the sons of Israel had light in their dwellings (23).” Ponder that image for a moment. The world is immersed in a deep darkness but there in the distance are the brightly glowing dwellings of the Israelites. It’s evidence of God’s presence in the darkness and a vivid picture for us today.
In the darkness that seeks to engulf us today, God’s light continues to shine brightly in the world. It is a beacon to those immersed in a place that hinders their sight. It is hope to us as believers in Jesus when we feel overwhelmed and crushed by our circumstances. Not only is God’s eternal light a beacon of hope in a dark world, but it also lights our way when darkness attempts to overcome us.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. – Matthew 5:14-15, NASB
