The Natural State of Worship

At what point is our worship more about us than God; more about the building than God; more about the performance than God. In Deuteronomy 27:5-6, God instructed the Israelites to use uncut stones to build an altar to worship Him after they crossed the Jordan River.

Several commentaries suggest the reason is to keep the worship focused on God, not the craftsmanship of people. Using rocks unaltered by human hands means they would be in their natural, found state as God formed them.

It’s an apt reminder that this is exactly how God wants us to serve Him. He wants to use you in your natural, formed state, just as He created you. He wants you to worship Him from the heart. You don’t need to be shaped or formed to fit some manmade view, He wants you today for who you are, simple and purely devoted to Him.

Moreover, you shall build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones; you shall not wield an iron tool on them. – Deuteronomy 27:5, NASB
