Our house has a history that I think is unique to most houses. One Sunday morning during my morning time reading scripture, that history came to mind. You see our house was built where a church once stood. In fact when our house was built it used some of the old foundation of that church.
As I sat there that morning, I thought of the voices of God’s faithful singing praises to Him. I imagined people entering the sanctuary with heavy hearts, weighed down by life’s challenges, and sharing them in prayer with others. I wondered if the scripture I read that morning was preached in the building that once stood where our house is now.
A devastating fire destroyed that church nearly 80 years ago. They rebuilt at another location and the previous owners of our house purchased the lot and built the home we now live in. Sometimes when I’m doing yard work, I still find small pieces of stained glass windows or dishes buried in the soil. Small reminders of the congregation that once worshipped here.
All of this makes me consider that our homes can also be a place of worship. We can read scripture and share its message with those who visit our homes. We can sing praises to God with those who gather around our table. We can welcome those with heavy hearts and pray with them, sharing with them the peace of Christ.
When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly. – Luke 19:5-6, NASB
