And he also informed us of your love in the Spirit. – Colossians 1:8, NASB
It’s a simple phrase, “love in the Spirit,” yet our flesh makes it hard to do. Without the Spirit of God working in us, it is challenging to love difficult people in our life. It’s hard to turn the other cheek instead of getting revenge (Matthew 5:38-39). If we operate only from our flesh, it can be virtually impossible to tame our anger when people hurl insults and demeaning words at us.
Our faith in Jesus and the Spirit of God at work within us helps us to overcome our fleshly instincts. It helps us tame our anger in response to people who do hurtful things to us and to discern the best response. Without the Spirit, we are bound to exhibit the deeds of the flesh described in Galatians 5:19-21.
When we rely on the Spirit to direct us, we are equipped to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44).” The Spirit enables us to love difficult people and see that they are also broken people in need of a savior just like us. The Spirit helps us respond with wisdom instead of rash actions born out of anger.
The next time you feel anger begin to boil inside of you, pray for the Spirit of God to guide your response. Pray for the person who stirred up your anger. Pray for the peace that surpasses all understanding to cover the situation (Philippians 4:7).
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. – Galatians 5:16, NASB
Amen. Chris, your testament speaks with so much truth. During my past years as a teacher and coach, I encountered situations with difficult people. The Spirit witnessed to my heart to share grace.
Praise God for His Spirit to guide us. Thanks for the comment. Blessings.
Thanks for this word of wisdom and encouragement. Taming anger can be a challenge when we are fending for ourselves and not employing the power of the Holy Spirit.
Well said. Thanks for sharing that thought. May the Spirit of God guide us as we interact with others. Blessings.
