We tend to think of big jobs requiring big things. If I need to move a lot of dirt I’m going to get a big earth moving machine. Yet when it comes to faith in Jesus, how big does my faith need to be, particularly when I’m facing a mountain-sized trial?
Jesus said if you have faith the size of a mustard seed you can move those mountains (Matthew 17:20). A mustard seed is pretty tiny compared to a mountain. It’s not exactly a bulldozer.
Tiny faith isn’t how the world views it. God often uses small things, small steps to move mountains in the world, sometimes over long periods of time. Christianity conquered the Roman Empire in hundreds of years starting with a small band of people armed with only the gospel of Jesus.
In Mark 4:30-32, Jesus also talks about the tiny mustard seed. In this passage, however, he also talks about the mustard seed being planted and growing into a large tree. We might relate that to an acorn becoming a mighty oak tree. The key here is that it took time to grow that small seed into a large tree that could support others.
Can a faith the size of a tiny mustard seed move a mountain? Sometimes the mountain that is moved is the change that comes from surrendering to God’s will. If I am totally abiding in God, my faith will be aligned with Him. The seemingly impossible becomes possible with God as we gain understanding of His will and purposes.
(NASB) 23 And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.” – Mark 9:23-24
Amen. Chris, I appreciate the relevance found in the title of this post. Your testament follows with an encouraging theme. The patience found in the smallest opportunities of faithful witness will steadily grind away at the mountain in front of us.
Well said. Thanks for the comment. Blessings.
