Surely You Jest

God often issues warnings in the Bible about impending destruction. Choosing to listen to Him or not can be a matter of life and death. Such was the case with Lot and Rahab.

Lot, the nephew of Abraham, was warned about the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. He tries to convince his sons-in-law to flee with him: “Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, and said, ‘Up, get out of this place, for the LORD will destroy the city.’ But he appeared to his sons-in-law to be jesting (Genesis 19:14, NASB).’” Then his wife ignores God’s warning about not looking back and she turns to a pillar of salt (19:26).

Compare the response of Lot’s family to the family of Rahab, a prostitute living in Jericho before its fall to the Israelites. When Rahab encounters the spies, she hides them and helps them flee to safety. Before they depart, she tells them, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you (Joshua 2:8).” She asks the two spies to spare her family.  The spies replied, “Our life for yours if you do not tell this business of ours; and it shall come about when the LORD gives us the land that we will deal kindly and faithfully with you (14).”

When the Israelites take Jericho, they spare Rahab’s family: “Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, ‘Go into the harlot’s house and bring the woman and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her.’ So the young men who were spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all she had; they also brought out all her relatives and placed them outside the camp of Israel (22-23).”

It’s amazing that the prostitute Rahab, living in the sinful city of Jericho, heeded God’s warning and saved her family and relatives while Lot, the nephew of Abraham, was only able to save his two daughters. We too can be a conduit of salvation to our family and relatives. If only they will listen and heed God’s word.

Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. For this is what the Lord has commanded us: “‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” – Acts 13:46-47, NASB

    1. And we are given the privilege of being children of God.
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name (John 1:12).”

      Thanks for the comment. Blessings.

    1. Like the parable Jesus told in Matthew 22 where the people rejected the King’s invitation to a wedding banquet. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Blessings.
