Every day she trudged along this dusty, worn path, seeking to satisfy her thirst. She lowered her bucket deep into the well and strained to pull up a bucket full of water. As she raised her cupped hand to her parched mouth and drank, she knew she would be back here tomorrow; her thirst would never be satisfied.
Isn’t that like life. You trudge along dusty, worn paths over and over again seeking to fill your parched soul. You lower your empty bucket of emotions deep inside the well and fill it with temporal things. It satisfies for the moment. You try to forget that you will return thirsty tomorrow and seek to fill your bucket again.
So there you are the next day at the well with your bucket, but this day is different. A man tells you about a different path you can take: “Jesus answered and said to her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, “Give Me a drink,” you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water (John 4:10, NASB).’” It only seems logical to ask him where to get this living water.
Then he responds by pointing out the difference between the dusty, worn path you’re on and the path he invites you to walk. “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life (4:13-14).” The dryness in your mouth is evident as you think about never having to come to this well again. “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw (15).”
There is a deep desire inside to be honest with him as he questions you about your life. You can see he knows you are weary from trudging along the same unsatisfying path every day. He explains the emptiness of what you currently worship and shows you truth. “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers (23).” You can feel the living water flowing into your body, quenching your thirst with living water.
So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. Many more believed because of His word; and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.” – John 4:40-42, NASB
Blessings be with you, Chris. I appreciate how you allowed your thoughts to unpackage this encouraging testament from Jesus’ moment at the well with the Samaritan women. As your title says, we can drink from life’s emptiness and repeat it over and over. Or we can accept the grace found in His living water.
Thanks for the comment. May our lives overflow with living water into those around us. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.
How amazing that they heard His Word and accepted, and believed that “this One is indeed the Savior of the world.”
Thanks for the comment. God continues to amaze me in how he reaches people. Blessings.
