What You Really Need to Live

How much do you need to live? In Exodus 16, the Israelites have just left Egypt and are complaining about their lack of food. “You have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger,” they tell Moses (3, NASB). God told Moses that he would provide “bread from heaven” for them, but what’s interesting is that he planned to test them with it (4).

While God does indeed provide bread from heaven each morning to the Israelites, they are instructed to only gather what they need for their family for that day. It is a test to see if they could trust God to provide for their needs each day and not doubt God by collecting more and storing it. “This is what the LORD has commanded, ‘Gather of it every man as much as he should eat; you shall take an omer apiece according to the number of persons each of you has in his tent (16).”

How much do you need to live on? “When they measured it with an omer, he who had gathered much had no excess, and he who had gathered little had no lack; every man gathered as much as he should eat (18).” God provided exactly what they needed just for that day. Those that gathered more than they needed soon discovered that the excess “bred worms and became foul” by the next morning (20).”

It reminds me of the parable that Jesus told in Luke 12:16-22 about the rich man who built barns to store his plentiful harvest. The rich man was focused on storing up his wealth for years to come, not eternal things. True wealth is found in the Kingdom of God, not in worldly things. In the parable the rich man died before he could enjoy his riches. Just as any excess manna collected by the Israelites rotted the next morning, all our worldly possessions will also rot and decay.

God wants us to nurture his eternal riches in our life. He wants us to trust that he will provide for our needs. He wants us to depend on Him, not ourselves. “And He said to His disciples, ‘For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing (Luke 12:22-23).’”

How much do you need to live on? You need God to truly live. Store up His eternal riches

And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying. For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you. — Luke 12:29-31, NASB

    1. Thanks for the comment. This verse comes to mind: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33
      Blessings.

      1. Absolutely. I’m a bit of a collector and hoarder, so I’m always conscious of carrying large quantities of ‘stuff’, that I may not ‘need’.
