What does it mean to give it all to God, to obey all he asks you to do? There may be things we are not aware of that we place above God. In Genesis 22, Abraham is tested to see if he placed above God one thing he holds near and dear to his heart. In verse 2 God tells Abraham, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you (NASB).”
This was a huge ask of Abraham. For years they had been childless and, “Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; Sarah was past childbearing (Genesis 18:11).” But God finally blessed them with Isaac. “So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him (21:2).” He was proud of his son: “The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned (8).”
Abraham was tested to make sure he didn’t place his son, his blessings, above God. We must be vigilant that we don’t embrace what God blesses us with and call it our own, forgetting that all we have is given by God. “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (Deuteronomy 6:5).”
Abraham is obedient to God’s call to sacrifice Isaac to the point of almost slaying his son. But an angel of the Lord said to him, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me (22:12).” The Lord then provided a lamb to Abraham to sacrifice instead of Isaac.
Is there something God is testing you with this day? Are you tightly holding onto your time, talents, or possessions and not freely offering them to God? Take a moment to reflect and determine if you are placing something near and dear to your heart above God.
“If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. Luke 14:26-27, NASB
A valid question we must all ask ourselves
Indeed. It makes me think of Matthew 22:36: “(NASB) And He said to him, “ ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’
