Many people in Jesus’ day pursued him with some level of faith or curiosity. They sought to see for themselves what he was about. Some came for healing, others to hear his teaching, still others because of people like the Samaritan woman:
So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men, “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it? They went out of the city, and were coming to Him (John 4:28-30).
They were open to the possibility that He was the Messiah, the Son of God sent to save humanity.
Then there were those who came to Jesus with an agenda. Their intent was to discredit Jesus and stop Him from challenging their way of thinking. We see this in Matthew 16:1: “The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.” Despite all the miracles Jesus performed and all the witnesses to his teaching, they remained skeptical.
The Pharisees, Sadducees, and scribes were hardened in their own beliefs and traditions. They saw Jesus as a threat to their way of life. Because of their agenda, they could not engage Jesus in a thoughtful way that opened their eyes and hearts to what Jesus offered. They missed out on knowing the fullness of God, the love of Christ that surpasses understanding (Ephesians 3:19).
See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. – Hebrews 3:12-13, NIV
And aren’t we all Pharisees sometimes, when we blind ourselves with selfish ambition. 😕 Praise God for His glory within us! Praise God for His mercy and grace to such sinners!
