Fear in the Storms of Life

I see it on the horizon of my life. Dark clouds brewing with claps of thunder and bolts of lightning. The wind intensifies as the storm bears down on me. Soon my life is engulfed with conflict, trauma, and trials that seem unbearable.

Suddenly I’m overcome by fear. How could this happen? After all, I climbed into the boat with Jesus. Certainly with Him by my side, I shouldn’t feel like this life storm will overtake and crush me. As the storm rages on, I look at Jesus asleep in the boat with me. There is a peace He has that I don’t quite understand. “Save me Lord; I won’t survive this,” I shout out to Him.

In that moment Jesus’ gentle eyes open and look at me as the storm engulfs us. “He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?’ Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm (Matthew 8:26, NASB).” Little faith indeed.

Who is this man that can calm the life trials raging on around me? The storms of life continue to show me just how much more I need to trust that God is in control of all things. His timing is perfect. He continues to strengthen my faith and teaches me that I have nothing to fear. At the right moment, He will calm the storm.

When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” He *said to them, “Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?” – Matthew 8:23-27 NASB

And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:7

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. – Deuteronomy 6:5

  1. Amen. This reading from Matthew’s Gospel reminds us that our Savior is forever fearless. As believers, we encourage others to allow Jesus to board their storm-weary craft.

  2. One of God’s greatest blessings to us (first, of course, being salvation) is the peace He brings. He reminds us of His peace, and tells us how to abide in that peace (that is, in Him). I love that He is ALWAYS with me, in me, around me. I live in the palm of His Hand.
