Walking the beach for me is a great time to think, to ponder God’s word. If you’ve followed this blog for awhile, you’ll notice many of my post have pictures of the beach near our home. One characteristic of Lake Michigan beach is that some stretches have lots of rocks. Sometimes this prompts me to search for the perfect skipping stone, particularly if the lake is calm—the perfect surface for skipping stones.
Among the hundreds of rocks, I look for rocks that are flat and rounded. When I find a handful of these rocks, I proceed to attempt to skip them across the calm water. The technique I use is to throw the stone with as much force as possible, and with a spin, so that is strikes the water parallel with the surface. The ideal result is that the rock will skip across the water, creating multiple sets of ripples as it goes.
The other day, as I watched the stones skip across the water, I noted the multiple sets of ripples left behind each time the rock struck the water. It reminded me of the Word of God, creating ripples of impact in someone’s life, then that person passing on God’s Word to someone else, creating more ripples of impact that pass on to another life.
As believers in Jesus, we have benefitted from someone impacting our life with the Word of God. When God’s word touched our heart, it created ripples that changed our life. As we encounter other people in our life, may our life in Christ touch them so the ripples of God’s Word continue to spread.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. – John 14:6 (NASB)
Amen! There is much joy in seeing God’s Word extending its ripples of truth. My brother and his wife enjoy searching the shore of Lake Michigan for perfect stones to polish. I like to believe that they bring back a bit of our Creator’s hands at work.
I like that—bringing back a bit of God’s handiwork. Thanks for sharing. Blessings.
Good thoughts Chris…and we should use big rocks for big ripples.
Good point! Thanks for sharing. Blessings.
Such a beautiful post!!! Thank you so much for sharing this reflection with us today. Wishing you blessings!!!
Thanks for reading! Blessings.
I like the analogy you draw with the delightful beach pursuit of stone skimming, thank you.
Incidentally last weekend saw the annual World Championships of Stone Skimming in Argyll Scotland – https://www.stoneskimming.com/
That must have been fun to watch! I looked at the results. Impressive. Thanks for sharing. Mackinac Island in Michigan holds a competition every July 4th https://www.stoneskipping.com/mackinac-island-stone-skipping-events.
Wow these guys are really serious professionals! 😁
They sure are! I’m lucky if I get more than a half dozen skips.
