What is it that causes people to become disheartened and dissatisfied? Often it is related to lacking something in their life. In Deuteronomy, God lays out the law to govern His people, showing them a path to being content, to be satisfied with what they have been given. Not only does he orient them toward God, reminding them of what He has given them, but he wants them to care for those who are lacking in daily sustenance.
Caring for the needy isn’t just about providing for their needs, but it is also about helping to ensure they don’t become discouraged and dissatisfied with life. Deuteronomy 6:12 tells us, “When you have finished paying all the tithe of your increase in the third year, the year of tithing, then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger, to the orphan and to the widow, that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied (NASB).”
When we hold back on helping the needy, we can sow seeds of discontent that can lead to sinful behavior. A heart of gratitude for what God has given us also helps fill us with generosity and understanding of God’s provision for our lives. It gives us a proper orientation toward expressing gratitude in sharing with those in need.
Blessings Chris for sharing this testament. We need to more aware of people’s emotional and spiritual needs when we are seeking ways to serve.
I had forgotten about that verse and it shines a really interesting light on our own giving.
It hit me that our generosity isn’t just about meeting needs, it also impacts a person’s level of contentment. Thanks for the comment. Blessings.
