Reviewing Reviews

⭐️ Promised Land

Enjoyed the fruit, milk and honey, but did not feel welcome. Fortified cities made us feel vulnerable — like grasshoppers about to be crushed by very tall and strong people everywhere. Did not feel safe. Would not recommend. – Wilderness Nomad

So many travel sites have reviews about various destinations by people who visited them. It makes me think of the spies sent out by Moses to scope out the Promised Land:

So they gave out to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size. There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” – Numbers 13:32-33 (NASB)

It is interesting how the perception of a place, based on the experience of a handful of people, can sway so many other people. Think about it for a moment. Someone can give a five-star rating for a place and someone a one-star rating. The result would be an overall 2.5-star rating.

How often do we go by what other people say about us, the church or even Jesus? Do we rely on other people to shape our opinion about God or do we rely on what scripture says about God’s promises? One person’s one-star rating can pull down our five-star view of ourselves, others or the church. People are fickle and full of expectations that aren’t always realistic. God’s Word is dependable, faithful and true.

The opinions of people can steer us in the wrong direction. If we only look for 5-star ratings from people, we may miss out on God’s promises. In the case of the Israelites, ignoring God’s promise and only looking at that one-star rating for the Promised Land gained them a trip in the wilderness:

As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land and who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing out a bad report concerning the land, even those men who brought out the very bad report of the land died by a plague before the LORD. – Numbers 14:36-37

  1. Great post, unique and interesting perspective. I love reading how you think about things. Best of all, God’s Truth: read His Word!

  2. Love this entire message. Amen “The opinions of people can steer us in the wrong direction. If we only look for 5-star ratings from people, we may miss out on God’s promises.” On yesterday a sister-in-Christ spoke to me about feeling bad about people she believes hate her when they are supposed to love her. I told her I would blog on this subject. I gave her scripture, prayed for her, sent her the song Glorious Day and assured her it matters most how God feel about us. I will text your blog to her. Thank you. #likedmindedintheLord

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for helping your sister-in-Christ remember she is an image bearer of God. It’s a good reminder that we need to lift up and encourage one another in Christ. Blessing.
