It’s a profound line. One of the criminals crucified with Jesus said, “And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong (Luke 23:41, NASB).” Indeed, we deserve to suffer, deserve death for our sins. We deserve to be on that cross instead of Jesus.
Yet the depth of God’s love and grace for us is demonstrated in the sacrifice of His son Jesus; a sacrifice made to redeem us. There is nothing we can do to save ourselves, yet Jesus could’ve saved himself. The man who calmed the stormy waters by commanding them to stop, chose to suffer a painful death for us. There is nothing we can do to earn this grace.
We deserve death for our deeds, yet God gave us a choice. We only need to humbly accept we are sinners and turn our life over to Christ Jesus; to live a life for Him.
