Both of them saw the power of God through Jesus. Both became fearful after witnessing Jesus’ miracles, but how they responded was very different. It’s often how people still respond to Jesus today.
In Luke 8:22-25, the disciples were traveling across a lake when a fierce gale met them. They see Jesus sleeping in the boat. They woke him up and said, “Master, Master, we are perishing (NASB, 23)!” They become fearful after Jesus calmed the wind and waves, “saying to one another, ‘Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?’” They respond with awe.
Compare that with the response in the next passage in Luke 8:26-39 where Jesus frees a man from demons and sends the demons into a herd of swine that rush down a steep bank and drown (33). When the people of the city come to investigate what they had heard about, they were frightened (35). “And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes and the surrounding district asked Him to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear; and He got into a boat and returned (37).”
Jesus is still at work today in the lives of people. There are times when a miracle or transformed life demands a response from people. Some, like the disciples, will respond in awe and continue to pursue Jesus. Others will dismiss him, fearful that he has the power to change them.
And as Jesus returned, the people welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him. – Luke 8:40, NASB
Chris, this testament nourishes anyone’s faith with the dynamic truth found in Christ’s light. God’s peace.
“fearful that He has the power to change them.” — A fearful thought, indeed, because He does!
This is why Jesus invites us. We all need change, and it happens through Him. But it’s too scary or too disdainful for some. 😞
If only they would realize the joy they’re missing with the eternal hope Jesus provides. It’s sad to see it rejected by people I know.
Thanks for the comment. Blessings.
