They were so discouraged, so beaten down that they could not comprehend that freedom from their trials was at hand. They held a deaf ear to God’s word and the hope it contained. They were so used to living without hope, that it was hard to receive encouragement.
Can you relate to that or do you know someone who is so discouraged that they cannot hear the hope of God’s word? This is the state of the Israelites after hundreds of years of cruel bondage under the Egyptians. The NASB Bible describes them as being despondent (Exodus 6:9). The Message describes them in the same verse as “beaten down in spirit.”
It reminds me of times in my life where I’ve felt so discouraged that it was hard to hear the hope in God’s word. It seemed I could only hear scripture like Psalm 42:3: “My tears have been my food day and night, While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God (NASB)?” I could not comprehend the hope offered in the same Psalm: “Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him For the help of His presence (42:5).”
God is steadfast. His hope never fails. He hears your cries but do you hear His word? In the middle of your despondency, your feelings of being beaten down, remember the suffering of Jesus and the gift of salvation He offers. Place your hope in God.
“My foot has held fast to His path; I have kept His way and not turned aside. I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food. – Job 23:11-12, NASB
Blessings Chris for sharing this testament. God’s Word continues to find openings in our daily walk with Him. May we be encouraged to spend time with Him.
May we be drawn closer to God each day. Thanks for the comment. Blessings.
This is exactly how I’ve felt, at times, brother Chris. I realize I need to turn to God and His hope, but feel too down to do so. Thankfully, God is patient and willing to come more than half way to help. This is a timely word. Thank you, and God Bless.
Thank you for sharing that. Praying God will strengthen you and fill you with His hope. May the prayers of God’s faithful lift you up. Blessings.
