Patient Compassion

Over and over in the Old Testament, King after King did evil in the sight of the Lord. Even though God sent prophets to call them to account and return to worshipping only Him, they still rebelled. Yet God was patient with them. 2 Chronicles 35:15 is an example: “The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to them again and again by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place (NASB).”

Yet there was a limit to God’s patience with the rebellious spirit of the Israelites. “But they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, until there was no remedy (2 Chronicles 36:16). Because of their behavior, they lost the good land and were sent into exile in Babylon.

Everyday we struggle with demands and temptations in our life. As Paul wrote, “For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please (Galatians 5:17).” Some days the struggle may wear us down and weaken us, but Paul reminded us to “walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh (5:16).” Keep your mind focused on Jesus and let the Spirit of God guide you each day. Let God strengthen you.

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. – 2 Peter 3:9, NASB

Thank you. The part about walking by the power of the Holy Spirit strikes a chord early this morning. Blessings!
