Crying Over the Removal of Tears

Every time I read Revelation 21:1-7, it brings tears to my eyes thinking about the removal of suffering. I know that’s ironic since this is the passage that talks about God “wiping away every tear (NASB).” But as long as I’m in this world, there will still be tears. Yet these verses are not just some future hope we long for, they are saturated with hope for today.

Just look at the hope God offers. One day a new heaven and a new earth will replace this broken world (21:1). We can feel the anticipation right now, like a groom watching his bride walking down the aisle to meet him (2). On that day, “God himself” will dwell among those who believe in Jesus (3). Meanwhile, today we get a glimpse of this hope. God’s Spirit also dwells with us today (John 14:26). Offering a peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

While there is a future hope of God wiping away all tears, today you can feel His presence, His touch on your life. Today you can feel his comfort with the hope that one day all the things that caused those tears, death, mourning, crying, and pain will be no more (4). God will make all things new. We will be made whole as we were originally intended to be before sin entered the world (5). God will feed our thirst “from the spring of the water of life without cost (6).” That is hope we can believe in.

He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. – Revelation 21:7, NASB

  1. Amen. Our heavenly Father feeds our faith with His daily Word, and His Son quenches our thirst for tomorrow’s hope in the Spirit’s living waters.

  2. And I his daughter … as the old song says, “What a day that will be.” Although our walk with the Lord today definitely isn’t too shabby.
