Agape love is not just a selfless love, but a love that no longer keeps score. It removes the transactional relationship of doing something and expecting something in return. It gets rid of the mentaility of doing something to secure someone’s favor. It removes expectations placed on other people. Agape love has the potential to trade all that holds us to the past for a new future driven by Christ-centered love.
Agape love is not losing yourself, the person God made you to be. It does not eliminate your calling, the destiny God has for you. Yet it helps you see the image of God in others, the true person God made them to be. It helps you divide the disorders, the illnesses created by the past, from the real person they are meant to be. Agape love helps you see past faults to how Jesus can transform lives. It transforms hopelessness into hope.
When applied to our life, it helps define who we are in Jesus. It helps us focus on the important things in life and shed the pointless and petty arguments that divide us and fracture relationships. It motivates us to take the first step toward healing, not just broken relationships, but our broken self. Agape love can help forge a new future, a future built on confidence of who you are in Christ Jesus, not in the eyes of someone else.
We love, because He first loved us. If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. – 1 John 4:19-20, NASB
