Going Against Logic

Sometimes God calls his faithful to do things that go against logic. In the case of Obadiah in 1 Kings 18:1-20, he was asked to do something he thought would get Elijah killed. Instead it set up a show down that revealed God’s ultimate power.

During a severe famine, Obadiah is helping Ahab scrounge for grass for their livestock. Even though Ahab is an evil king who worships other gods, Obadiah has feared the Lord since his youth (1 Kings 18:12). Then he encounters Elijah who Ahab has sought to kill. Elijah asks Obadiah to tell him he found him.

Obadiah protests, telling Elijah all the reasons why it isn’t a good idea, mainly because it could put their lives in danger. But Elijah responded, “As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today (15, NASB).” What follows is a showdown between the 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah that displays God’s power and might.

When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The LORD, He is God; the LORD, He is God.” – 1 Kings 18:39, NASB
