Moving the Immovable

“That will never happen. Things will never change.” Over the years I have found myself saying these things in response to seemingly impossible situations. But what does that say about my trust in God? Is it possible to change things that seem unchangeable?

Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it will happen. And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive (Matthew 21:21-22).”

He said this after the disciples noticed how he had caused a fig tree to wilt. Jesus caused physical change to a plant. How much more could he do to change a life? When I read that verse I tend to focus on the part where Jesus says move a mountain and think that’s impossible. I tend to overlook the part where he says, “have faith and do not doubt.”

The question that keeps pressing into my life is whether I can trust God enough to align my life with his will and His timing. Can I truly abide in Him (John 15:4)? When I have doubts, God reminds me of the mountains I have seen Him move in the past. The lives He has changed. How he made the seemingly impossible, possible. I am reminded to trust the wisdom of God and His sovereignty.
