Sunday after Sunday the Word of God is preached. It feeds the Spirit of a people hungry for God’s word. Yet they leave each week and return to their lives with practical needs for food, clothing, and housing. Needs for physical and emotional healing.
Jesus took note of this in Mark 8:1-9. A large crowd had gathered and Jesus told his disciples, “I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat (2, NASB).” Jesus pointed out that some came from far away and sending them home hungry might cause them to faint on the way.
Even though his disciples questioned how to feed the thousands gathered, Jesus took what they had, a few loaves and fishes, and fed the crowd. “And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces (8).” The people left filled with the Word of God and their hunger satisfied. Spiritual and practical needs met.
For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ – Matthew 25:35-36, NASB
