Is Your Life Salty Enough?

“You are the salt of the earth,” Jesus said in Matthew 5:13 (NASB).” Yet for as long as I remember, salt was a limited part of my diet. I’m not sure what my mom read when I was a kid, but suddenly salt was rationed in our house. It became a habit to limit my salt intake that I carried into adulthood. But that all changed early last year.

“Add more salt to your diet,” my doctor said. She told me it would help minimize the light-headedness I was feeling. Skeptical about its impact, nonetheless I diligently added more salt to my diet over the following months. I felt like I was doing something wrong as I sprinkled liberal amounts of salt on my food. It went against everything I was taught as a kid.

Yet something began to happen as I increased my salt intake. My episodes of lightheadedness were less frequent. Another thing happened that also surprised me. I began to acquire a taste for more salt in my food. A part of me felt like I had been missing out on something for all these years. It led me to explore other spices and how they affected the taste of food.

It’s kind of like faith in Jesus. Someone tells you years ago to limit your intake of Jesus. You’re not exactly sure why, but you follow their advice. Then there’s something in your life that doesn’t feel right and someone tells you to increase the amount of Jesus in your life.

At first you hesitantly sprinkle a little on your life. It tastes good, so you slowly add more and more. Soon things are feeling better and Jesus becomes a regular part of your life. That leads you to explore more of His word and how it can enhance more and more of your life. Suddenly you realize what you’ve been missing all these years just because of what someone told you years ago.

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12, NASB
