On the farm where I grew up there is an old gable roof barn built more than 120 years ago. Sometimes I would look at the beams inside the barn and think about my great grandfather working with others to craft the beams required to raise the barn. This is the image that came to mind when I read Ephesians 2:19-22:
“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit (NASB).”
The barn we used for milking the cows and storing hay for the winter was built by our ancestors. They laid the foundation, and “fitted together” the structure that we depended on each day for the operation of the farm. Inside that barn I could see how the foundation and massive beams supported the structure. I did not help build the barn, but I was part of it.
As believers in Jesus, we are part of an eternal kingdom built by our ancestors in the faith and laid on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. We rest on the cornerstone of Christ Jesus. We are part of this holy temple, adding to it our work with other believers, to continue to build God’s eternal kingdom.
Amen. When we experience real-time applications of God’s Word, our faith deepens within another breath of our Savior. Chris, there are numerous barns not far from my home. Now when I encounter one, my thoughts will see the internal foundation of its strength and longevity.
Thanks for the comment. God is evident all around us. Yes, such joy in seeing His revelation in our daily life. Blessings.
