There are times in life when the enemy wears us down. The battle becomes too much and it seems evil will prevail. By ourselves we grow weary from the fight. Yet it is not our battle to fight alone.
Exodus 17:8-12 gives us a great image of how to fight against the enemies we face. When Amalek came to fight against Israel at Rephidim, Moses told Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand (8-9, NASB).”
The same staff of God Moses used to part the Red Sea then crush the Egyptian army is the same staff he raised against Amalek. As the battle raged on, Moses’ hands grew tired. “So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed (11). Aaron and Hur responded by supporting his hands, one on each side. “Thus his hands were steady until the sun set (12).”
The same God who parted the Red Sea, who helped the Israelites defeat Amalek, is the same God available to you today. You don’t have to fight your battles alone. Choose faithful followers of Jesus to fight with you. Hold up the staff of God against the enemies that seek to harm you. When you grow weary, have faith-filled friends stand beside you to help keep God’s staff raised high.
