The Insignificant Significant Details

I am always amazed at how God links things together, sometimes over years, to achieve His plan. I saw it with the publication of my first book where God brought people into my life, some years earlier, to help me complete the project. We can see this with Esther and how God raised her up to be queen in order to save her people.

In Esther 1:12, Queen Vashti disobeyed the king’s order to come to him at a party so he could put her on display for all his guests. That sets up the king to dismiss her and seek a new queen (1:13-21-2:4). Because of the death of Esther’s parents, she is in Susa being cared for by Mordecai, and is taken into custody in the palace as a candidate to replace the queen (2:8).

While she is there, Esther gets the attention of the king’s servant Hegai and is given special treatment (2:9). He coached her on how to present herself to the king (2:15). “And Esther found favor in the eyes of all who saw her (2:15, NASB).” All the pieces of Esther’s life came together to position her for God’s plan: “The king loved Esther more than all the women, and she found favor and kindness with him more than all the virgins, so that he set the royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti (2:17).”

When Haman devised a plan to destroy the Jewish people throughout the kingdom, Esther is well-positioned to stop it (3:8-15-4:1-14). Mordecai tells Esther, “And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this (4:14).” Esther uses her position to stop Haman’s plot to destroy the Jewish people and turns it back on him (7:7-10).

It can be hard to understand why certain things happen. Esther went from an orphan to being positioned as queen to save the Jewish people from destruction. Like Mordecai or Hegai, we may play a role in helping others achieve God’s plan. We must have faith and trust in God when he calls us to do something, even if we never see the final result.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. – Proberbs 3:5-6, NASB

  1. Inspiring testament. Thank you Chris. During my teaching career, I witnessed how God took care of the significant details when I was laid off due to staff cuts. He taught my faith to trust.

    1. Thanks for sharing. It’s reassuring to look back over my life and see how God provided during difficult times. That brings to mind this scripture: “This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” – Lamentations 3:21-23
