The Unseen Legacy

What we do in our lifetime can impact generations to come. The choices we make can determine the direction of the lives of our descendants. Only God can see the arch of the fulfillment of His plan across the generations. Our obedience to God is an important part of His plan, even if we can’t see it or understand it.

In Genesis 24, “Abraham was old, advanced in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in every way (verse 1, NASB).” The Lord told him years earlier, “Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation (12:1-2). Now he was advanced in years with only his son Isaac to carry on his legacy.

His concern is that they remain in the land God brought them to. He tells his servant, “you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live, but you will go to my country and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac (Genesis 24:3-4).” When the servant asks if he should take his son back to the land they came from if he doesn’t get a wife for Isaac (5), Abraham replied, “Beware that you do not take my son back there!”

Because of Abraham’s obedience, his faithfulness to God’s call, the foundation was laid for the nation of Israel. His insistence on remaining where God placed him and staying true to God’s commands also helped build the faith of Israel. It’s a good model for us to think about as we look at our legacy.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. – Hebrews 11:1-2, NASB

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:1-2, NASB
