But I’m Not Trained to do That!

We may feel unqualified to do what God calls us to do, but we are only basing that on how we feel about our abilities. Sometimes God asks us to do things we feel we don’t have the skills or experience to do. This requires us to lean on God and not our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).

In Nehemiah 3, many people were called on to help reconstruct the wall of Jerusalem. The chapter details the background of many people who were not necessarily trained in construction. The most notable to me is 3:8: “And next to him Hananiah, one of the perfumers, made repairs, and they restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall (NASB).”

If a perfumer can answer the call to work on something as daunting as rebuilding a portion of the wall of Jerusalem, then certainly you can step out of your comfort zone to respond to what God is calling you to do. Because of the obedience of the perfumers, there was no gap in their section as as far as the Broad wall.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. -Proverbs 3:5-6, NASB

  1. I love this! 😍

Nehemiah is one of my favorite books; like all books in the Bible, there are so many details to put under a microscope and learn infinite things.

  2. “God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.” This was a favorite saying of my former pastor.

I’ve read and studied Nehemiah, but never caught the fact that many (like the perfumer) weren’t skilled in the building trades. Nehemiah didn’t contract with Jerusalem Restoration and Construction, LLC to rebuild the wall. Instead, God used him to bring together a motley crew of motivated do-it-yourselfers, who got the job done in 50 something days.

    1. I’m so grateful that God knows us better than we know ourselves and what we’re capable of accomplishing for Him. Thanks for the comment. Blessings.
