To prepare a way for Christ Jesus, for the Messiah. It was John’s calling as told by his father Zachariah in Luke 1:76: “And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him (NIV).” It is our calling today as followers of Jesus, to prepare hearts to receive Jesus, to prepare a way for the Lord.
Of John, Zachariah said he would “give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins (1:77).” This is the same knowledge we can give to people today, the knowledge of salvation through Jesus; the knowledge that their sins can be forgiven through Jesus Christ.
Just as Zachariah told of God’s “tender mercy (1:78)” in bringing light “to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death (1:79),” we too can share this good news about Jesus. In a world in turmoil, we can guide others “into the path of peace (79).”
